A depth tool is used more in making than in repairing watches. It is required for scoring off the exact position of the pivot holes upon the watch plates, previous to drilling them. It consists of two parallel frames, hinged together and capable of being adjusted by a thumbscrew to any required distance apart. Each frame is provided with runners like a small pair of turns. In one frame a wheel is placed, in the other a pinion. The frames are then adjusted to such a distance apart that the wheel runs nicely with the pinion. The outside points of the runners can then be used as a pair of compasses to transfer the exact distance to the watch plate.
