The numbers of officers and men on the active list are variously stated to be from 6,000 to 8,000. The executive officers are distributed as follows: 1 vice-admiral, 4 rear-admirals, 11 captains, 18 commanders, 16 lieutenant-commanders, 25 lieutenants, and 36 midshipmen.
