C. officinale: biennial; stem stout, erect, branched, about two feet high, with rough hairs; leaves lanceolate, or the lowest ones oblong, the uppermost sessile and clasping the stem, all hoary with dense soft appressed down; racemes numerous, mostly simple, forming a terminal leafy panicle, the corolla small, dull purplish-red. - Roadsides and waste places.
