From the few analyses accessible it appears that the caffein content of mate is about that of tea. One analysis made under my supervision showed a content of alkaloid of 1.35 percent. It has been known to the inhabitants of South America for hundreds of years. Wonderful claims are made for its sustaining powers and fatigue-relieving properties. One enthusiastic writer says: "Alone and independent of all other foods the infusion of mate sustains the strength and vigor during entire days. In the practice of medicine mate is recommended in all cases where it is necessary to feed without exciting the nervous system and without loading the stomach." This is quite equal to the claims made for the virtues of the caffein containing drinks in sustaining muscular exertion and relieving fatigue. Any apparent relief in such cases is illusionary.
