The presence of free ammonia in water is an index that it has been in contact with decaying organic matter containing nitrogenous elements, and thus it is laid open to suspicion. Ammonia itself, in the small quantity and in the very dilute condition in which it is found in water, would not be considered injurious, but only as an index of contamination.
