Of these distilleries 11 are equipped for the production of grain whisky only, 3 for both grain and malt, 98 for Highland malt, 23 for Lowland malt, 9 for Islay malt, and 21 for Campbeltown malt. The grain whisky production is in very few hands, viz.; The Distillers' Company, Limited, of Glasgow and Edinburgh, who have most of the grain distilleries and who produce the "Cambus" whisky, which is chiefly neutral spirit of which the name grain whisky is a synonym; the North British Distillers' Company, Limited, Edinburgh; and one or two private firms. The Distillers' Company, although the largest producers of grain whisky, also make Highland and Lowland malt whisky, but we are not aware of any other makers of malt whisky who also make grain whisky. While the production of grain whisky is in very few hands that of malt whisky is in the hands of quite a number of limited companies and private firms. Hence the large number of brands and of blends.
