In addition to the drinks which are served at the soda fountain, similar drinks are bottled and sold generally to the consumer. There is a vast array of ginger ales, pops and materials of this kind, on the market. To this group may be added, also, the so-called root beers, which are sweetened water flavored with various extracts of medicinal and other herbs and sometimes slightly fermented. The same precautions in regard to the preparation of these drinks as were made in regard to soda waters should be observed. The basic material, that is, the water, should be pure and free of infection. The flavoring materials should be natural products. The sweetening material should be sugar only, and no alkaloidal body or active medicinal agent should be employed in their manufacture.
