The vineyards on the Rhine below Coblenz belong to the lower Rhineland region. As Cologne is approached the vineyards become fewer in number and finally disappear altogether. In the neighborhood of Linz, on the lower Rhine, a very beautifully colored dark red wine is produced, and in the neighborhood of Remagen a lighter red wine is found Above Remagen, debouching in the Rhine valley, the well-known valley of the Ahr is found, and in this valley a large number of wines are produced, some of which are red. The wine region of the Ahr Valley ends at the village of Honningen. Cologne was early known as a wine market of considerable magnitude.
