On the right bank of the Rhine opposite the Rheinpfalz are the wine regions of the Neckar and Tauberland. A famous town of this region is Heidelberg, noted equally for its enormous wine tun and for its university. The culture of the vine here is extremely ancient. As early as the year 628 A.D. are historical accounts of vine culture. At Heidelberg the Neckar escapes from the hills and comes into a plain of considerable magnitude. Visitors to Heidelberg never fail to see the wonderful ruins of the castle, where the great tun is still preserved.
The part of the Neckar valley which lies in Baden has attained the greatest name for wine production. The varieties of grapes known as Gutedel and Sylvaner, as well as Riesling, are cultivated. There is also made here a beautiful red wine, which is manufactured out of a mixture of white and red grapes. In the nearby Tauber valley of Baden, especially in the neighborhood of Werthheim, the culture of the grape has attained wide proportions. So-called white wine is the especial product of the Tauber valley. On the banks of the Main, between Werthheim and Freudenberg, white wine is chiefly produced, although Freudenberg red wine is highly valued. The chief towns where commerce in wine is carried on in these regions are Tauberbischofsheim and Werthheim.
Where the river Main runs its zigzag course through the hill country, especially between Bamberg and Aschaffenburg, a wine production of excellent quality has long endured. The center of the culture of the grape is the city of Wurzburg. Other important centers of the industry are Buchbrunn and Saaleck. The Stein wine and the Flaschen wine are produced in the neighborhood of Wurzburg. In late years the producers of wine in this region have been turning more and more from the white to the red wine type. Especially around the villages of Burgstadt, Miltenberg and Klingenberg.
