1 cup granulated sugar.

1 egg.

1 teaspoon soda.

1 teaspoon vanilla.

1/2 cup butter.

1/2 cup sweet milk.

1/4 teaspoon salt 4 1/2 cups flour.

2 teaspoons cream of tartar Filling.

1/2 cup dates, ground.

1/4 cup figs, ground.

1/4 cup black walnuts, chopped Grated rind and juice of one lemon.

1/2 cup raisins, ground.

1/2 cup English walnuts, chopped 1 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in water 1 cup granulated sugar.

1/2 cup water.

Mix all together and cook until thickened. Set away to cool.

Make dough like any butter cake.

Roll dough quite thin and cut with cookie cutter. Put one teaspoon filling in center of cookie and place another cookie on top. Press firmly around the edges. Bake in moderate oven.

Black walnuts may be omitted if desired.
