To 1 pkg. of dates (cut in pieces), add 1 cup of hot water, with one tsp. soda, and let cool. Cream 1 cup sugar, 1 tbsp. butter, 1 egg. Add date mixture to cream mixture and 1 1/2 cups of flour with 1 tsp. baking powder, then 1 cup nuts, salt and vanilla.
Ice with the following: Boil 2 tbsp. cream with 1 tbsp. butter, and. thicken while hot with pulverized sugar. - Mrs. G. C. Carnright.
1 box dates, seeded, 1 cup boiling water, 1 tsp. soda, heaping. Cut the seeded dates in pieces. Mix the boiling water with the soda and pour over the dates; let stand until the second part is ready. Second part: 1 cup sugar, 1 tbsp. butter, large, 3/4 cup nut meats, 1 tsp. baking powder, 1 egg, vanilla, 2 cups flour.
Cream sugar, eggs, and butter; then pour in the first part, also the nut meats, flour, vanilla and baking powder. Bake slowly. Cut in squares. Serve with a spoon of whipped cream and a cherry on top or cut in strips and roll in powdered sugar.

1 pkg. dates, 2 tbsp. butter. 1 tsp. soda. Pour 1 cup boiling water over this and let cool. Then add, 1 pinch salt, 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs (well-beaten), 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup nut meats.
Bake in slow oven in layers or loaf.

Mix: 1 cup sugar, 2 tbsp. butter, 1 egg, pinch of salt. Cut in small pieces, 1 pkg. dates and add 1 cup boiling water and 1 tsp. soda. Let cool and add to butter mixture. Then add 1 1/2 cups of flour, 1 cup chopped walnut meats and 1/2 tsp. vanilla.
Bake 30 minutes in 2 layers or sheet cake. Use chocolate filling. Cut into squares and top with whipped cream. - Mrs. Rohland Petterson.
Cut one package of dates in small pieces; add one cup hot water and 1 tsp. baking soda. Let stand until luke-warm.
Cream 1 cup sugar and 1 tbsp. butter and add 1 egg. Then add dates and water, 1 1/2 cups flour and 1 tsp. baking powder.
Add 1/2 cup chopped nuts.
