A pretty North American tree or shrub, with oblong lance-shaped leaves and drooping clusters of pure-white flowers with narrow fringe-like petals. C. retusus (fig. 417), from China, has leaves woolly beneath, and white sweet-scented flowers. Increased by seeds, cuttings, or layers, or grafts on stocks of the Common Ash.
