Stamens in two series, the five outer fertile. Flowers yellowish, appearing in Winter before the leaves. The only species is a native of Japan. Name from
winter, and avoos, a flower.
1. Ch. fragrans, syn. Calycanthus praecox. - A slender branching shrub with lanceolate acutely acuminate leaves hispid above, glabrous beneath. Flowers very fragrant. The variety grandiflbrus is the best.
