The air-dried Madotheca laevigata, Schrad. (Fam. Junger-manniaceae) yields 0,9 p. c. of a relatively limpid, orange-yellow oil1), which has a pleasant odor; d16 0,856; [a]D + 72,74°; S. V. 5,56. The peppermint-like taste of this liverwort is not due to the volatile oil. Fraction 150 - 160° (17 mm), d15 0,968; [a]D+ 132,23°, boils with decomposition at 280° under atmospheric pressure and contains an alcohol C10H18O.
