Preface To Fourth Edition

The continued demand for ' Lessons on Massage ' has made another edition necessary. I have made some alterations and a few additions.

Since the last edition appeared several books and articles have been published advocating a more extended application of massage in the treatment of fractures. Although massage of fractures has been spoken of as a new method, I have taught it in my school for several years, as can readily be seen on reference to my chapter on fractures, and have consistently impressed on students the absolute necessity for even and gentle work.

With a view to greater clearness, some of the illustrations have been drawn in larger size, some photographs have been replaced by new ones, and several figures have been coloured.

The index has been revised and made fuller.

An appendix has been added, giving the new names of muscles, etc., introduced by the Basle Convention.

Preface To First Edition

At the earnest and often-repeated request of my pupils, I publish my lessons on massage, in the hope that they and others will find them as useful as they anticipate. The instructions given are founded upon the results of many years' experience, both in teaching and in practical work.

I have culled from standard works on anatomy and physiology what is indispensable for the pupil masseuse to study, that she may have under one cover sufficient information on these subjects to enable her to learn her work intelligently, without burdening her memory with unnecessary details, and to have, later on, a handy book of reference.

Use has been made of the following works on anatomy and physiology : Quain, Ellis, Cunningham, Sparkes, Starling, Furneaux.
