The inferior vena cava is formed at the fifth lumbar vertebra by the union of the common iliac veins, and by its tributaries collects all the venous blood from the lower limbs, the abdominal viscera and part of the abdominal walls ; it passes through the vena-caval opening in the diaphragm to open into the lower part of the back of the right auricle.
