From what has gone before it will appear that, for the most part, it is in intense inflammations produced by virulent microbes that suppuration occurs. Phlegmonous inflammation is a name given to very acute inflammations accompanied by suppuration and necrosis. It is usually applied to inflammations of that character in the skin and subcutaneous tissue, of which erysipelas affords the best example.
