It is a common belief that feeble-minded persons make the best subjects. This is not true, but nevertheless persons of weak mind may perhaps be readily induced to submit to hypnosis, and an inexperienced operator may avail himself of this opportunity to secure a subject. But this is unwise. The parents or friends of the feeble-minded person may not realize his mental incapacity until after he has been hypnotized, and then they are very liable to attribute his mental infirmity to the effect of hypnotism. Or it may be that everyone may realize that the subject is feeble-minded, and the operator's influence over him will be attributed entirely to that cause, which will not add anything to his reputation as a hypnotist. It is best, under all circumstances, to leave feebleminded persons alone when looking for hypnotic subjects.
