Veratrine is a mixture of alkaloids obtained from the seed of certain veratrum plants.

It is a powerful poison, first irritant, then benumbing to the skin, and is exceedingly irritant to mucous mem branes.

It causes vomiting and purging, slows the pulse, weakens the heart and lowers the blood pressure. It paralyzes the termination of the motor nerves, but is stimulant to striated muscles. Death is caused by paralysis of the respiratory center.
