Moderate doses increase the secretion of the parotid, the pancreas, the liver, and the gastric and intestinal glands, the drug acting as a stimulant or irritant during its elimination by these structures.
The increased secretion has been variously attributed to irritation of the gland-cells, and to paralysis of their controlling nerves: the former is the primary, the latter a secondary effect.
