Origin. - The dried fruit of Carum Carvi L., a biennial plant native to Central and Western Asia. It is cultivated in Europe and in the United States.
Description and Properties. - Oblong, laterally compressed, about 1/6 to 1/5 inch (4-5 Mm.) in length, tapering somewhat at the ends, brown, with five yellowish, filiform ribs and six oil-mbes. Caraway has an agreeable odor and a sweetish, spicy taste.
Constituents. - It contains from 5 to 7 per cent. of a volatile oil.
Dose. - 15-30 grains (1.0-2.0 Gm.) [25 grains (1.6 Gm.), U. S. P.].
Tinctura Cardamomi Composita - Tinctiirae Cardamomi Compositae -Compound Tincture of Cardamom. - Dose, 1-2 fluidrams (4.0-8.0 Cc.) [1 dram (4 Cc), U. S. P.]. (Formula given under Cardamomum.)
