Latin, Physostigma
Eng., Physostigma. Synonyms, Calabar Bean, Ordeal Bean. The ripe dried seeds of Physostigma vene-nosum.
1 l/2 grains (0.1 Gm.).
Official Preparations and Constituent.
Eng., Extract of Physostigrma. A powder. Average Dose.-1/8 grain (0.008 Gm.).
Eng., Tincture of Physostigma. Represents 10 per cent. of the drug.
15 minims (1 mil).
Eng., Physostigmine Salicylate. Synonym, Eserine Salicylate. The Salicylate of an alkaloid obtained from Physostigma.
1/60 grain (0.001 Gm.).
Myotic and peristaltic.
The salt of Physostigmine is used to contract the pupils in the treatment of various eye conditions, and to produce purgation and combat intestinal distention, particularly after abdominal operations and in peritonitis, eclampsia, etc.
The Salicylate of Physostigmine is frequently employed by the physician hypodermically or otherwise, but is not often prescribed.
