Oleum Caryophylli.—Oil of cloves.

Composition

Oil of cloves consists of two substances—a hydrocarbon, light oil of cloves, and an oxygenated oil, eugenol, which has acid properties, and is therefore called eugenic acid. The light oil of cloves is isomeric with the oils of turpentine, copaiba, and cubebs.

Salicylic acid and a camphor known as caryophyllin are also constituents of the oil of cloves. Dose, gtt. ij—gtt. v.
