Palestine, or the "Holy Land" of the Christians, and the "Promised Land" of the ancient Hebrew, adjoins Arabia. It is a mountainous and unfertile little country, containing the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, the valleys of the Jordan, the Dead Sea, and the Sea of Galilee. The Dead Sea is the sal test body of water on earth. Its valley lies considerably below the level of the ocean. The Jordan flows into it, but there is no outlet. Palestine is under the dominion of the Turks, and has been for many centuries. To reclaim it religious zealots organized the Crusades, and hundreds of thousands of lives were sacrificed in the fruitless task.
