A girl's handkerchief box should be made rather dainty, and of such material that will retain the sweet fragrance of sachet or perfume. A box of this kind can be made of either thin wood or heavy cardboard such as book binders board.

About 8" square and 21/2" deep will be a good size to make this project; the size however, is something you can decide upon yourself.

Method Of Procedure

Step No. 1: Cut out the sides to the dimensions desired and then glue the pieces together at the corners. Since this box is to be both lined and covered, you can glue a reinforced strip of heavy paper or cloth across each corner.

Step No. 2: Glue and nail (if wood is used) the bottom in place. If cardboard is used, simply glue together.

Step No. 3: Cut out a piece of heavy cardboard or thin wood for the cover.

Step No. 4: Pad the outside of the box with sheet cotton and cover with an attractive material, such as silk, satin, cretonne etc., stitching the corners together and carry the covering material on the inside by about 1/4"; glue this edge down. This will be hidden by the inside lining.

Handkerchief Box

Step No. 5: Line the inside of the box by first putting cotton padding on the bottom and sides; then run your material on the bottom first and then the sides. A little glue will hold this in place.

Step No. 6: The cover should be padded with sheet cotton, then covered with the same material to form the hinge joint, which you will sew in place. A small loop sewed to the front of the cover will make a good handle for opening same.
