The brace, Fig. 64, is used to hold various kinds of bits. A ratchet brace differs from the plain brace in that, by means of an adjustment, it can be made to turn in one direction or the other, as well as being made to act as a plain brace.

To insert a bit, hold the brace as in Fig. 65, revolving the crank to open and close the jaws.
