You will not have any difficulty with this carving if you begin whittling around the pouch and the baby kangaroo. Emphasize the weight of the tail and the back legs, but keep the front legs small and weak. Rest the front legs on top of the baby's head to add strength to these legs.

Place pattern on softwood. Block size: 1 1/8 inches thick, 4 inches high, 4 1/2 inches long. Figure 121.
Begin whittling at the point indicated by the arrow, Figure 122. Keep tail heavy and massive. Thickest part of tail, 1/2 inch thick.

Work to base of neck. Thin out with V-notch cuts when carving head. Figure 123.
Block ears in proper relation to twisted head.
Whittle around pouch and baby kangaroo's head. Figure 124.
