A memory of the forest can be captured and made permanent in this carving of the beautiful and graceful white-tailed deer, with its brave and pert white flag. This speed-lined, trim creature is truly the aristocrat of American game.
Select a block of clear white pine, 1 inch thick, 5 inches high, and 5 inches long, making sure that the figure is laid out as indicated in Figure 115, with the grain of the wood diagonal to add strength to the legs.
Remove excess wood between the legs with a coping saw, Figure 116, and then thin the body down with a knife to a 5/8 inch thickness. Figure 117.

Begin carving at the front of the piece, shaping the ears, nose, chest, and legs. See Figures 118 and 119 for the correct proportions.
Sand and color as shown in Figure 120, and shellac or varnish.
