This timber, which is fairly common all over Europe, is noted for its great durability in all weathers. The wood is of a deep yellow colour, with close, even texture. The annual rings are fairly distinct, but the medullary ray is invisible.
It is flexible and very tough, but splits easily.
This tree is remarkable for its slowness of growth and great longevity, many trees now existing in a flourishing condition being known to be many centuries old.
