Insert the exposed film spool in the adjustable spool carrier to the right of the box, in such a manner that the paper will lead downward from the top of the spool. Close up the movable end of the carrier tight against the spool.

Pass the paper underneath the wire on the flanged reel, and turn the crank D slowly to the right until the word " Stop " appears in black letters on the red paper.

Now hook the free end of the apron to the lugs on the flanged reel, turn handle D half a revolution, so that the apron becomes firmly attached, and replace the cover of the box. Then turn slowly and steadily until the paper, the film, and the apron are rolled up together on the reel. As soon as this is completed the handle will turn very freely.

While turning handle D to the right, to wind the film and apron on to the reel, press in the opposite direction with the fingers of the left hand on handle C. This will act as a brake and will keep the apron, film, and paper taut and in correct position.

moment's study

Fig. 149.

A moment's study of this operation will show that the film lies upon the paper, face or sensitive surface outward, and that the corrugated rubber band running along each edge of the apron makes an air space between the sensitive surface of the film and the apron, and thus secures free access for the developer to the face of film.

Prepare the developer.

Next remove the cover from the box and draw out the crank D with one hand, holding the apron and the paper with the other hand to keep the end of the apron from loosening.

Remove entire the flanged reel (now containing the apron, the paper, and the film), and insert it immediately in the tank in which the developer has been prepared, taking care not to squeeze the apron, but to hold it loosely, and to slip a rubber band about it to prevent it unrolling. The removal of the reel from the box can be done in the light of an ordinary room, but of course the light should not be too bright.
