After the specified quantity of water has been treated, regeneration should be carried out in the following manner :

Shut valves " A " and " B " and open valves " F " " H " and steam valve "G." When the salt solution has been injected into the plant, shut valves " G " and " H " and open valve " A." Water will now be entering the plant at the top, and washing the salt away to drain, through valve " ;The plant is now in the cleansing position, and should remain so for about fifteen minutes to remove the remaining traces of salt, and until a lather can be obtained on a sample of water (see testing instructions). As soon as a satisfactory test has been carried out the valves should be put to their normal working position, as stated above.

The air vent valve "K "should now be opened to release any air which may have accumulated in the top of the cylinder. Then shut valve "K."

Valves "C " and " D " are not for general use, but are for the purpose of breaking up the " Permutit " bed and thus preventing it from packing, and removing any foreign matter which may have collected on top of the bed. They should be used about once per week, immediately before regeneration, in the following manner :

All valves closed : open valve " D," and slowly open valve " C," thus causing the water to flow through the plant in an upward direction, and away to drain through valve " D."

Instructions for Regenerating

During this operation care should be taken to see that no " Permutit " is washed away to drain. To ensure this, frequent samples of water should be taken.

Testing Instructions

Fill the shake bottle to the 40 c.c. mark with treated water.

(a) Before Regeneration-

From the drop bottle add 10 drops of soap solution to the sample in the shake bottle.

Now shake violently, when a permanent lather should be formed.

Should more than 10 drops of soap solution be required to form a permanent lather, it is an indication that regeneration is necessary.

(ft) After Regeneration-

Cleansing is complete when a permanent lather is obtained with 10 drops of soap solution. (United Water Softeners, Ltd.)
