Franz Anton Staudenmaier, a German theologian, born at Danzdorf, Wurtemberg, Sept. 11, 1800, died in Freiburg, Baden, Jan. 19, 1856. He studied at Tubingen, was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1827, became professor of theology at Giessen in 1830 and at Freiburg in 1837, and a canon in 1843, and in 1851 was elected a member of the first chamber of the legislature of Baden. His chief works are: GescliicMe der Bischofswahlen (Tubingen, 1830); EncyTclopadie der theologischen Wissen-8chaften(M.entz, 1834; 2ded., 1840); Der Geist des Christenthums (Mentz, 1835), many times reprinted and translated; and Die christliche Dogmatih (4 vols., 1844-'52, not complete), in which he attempts to harmonize the results of modern philosophy with the doctrines of the Catholic church. His other works include Sco-tus Erigena und die Wissenschaft seiner Zeit (vol. i., Frankfort, 1840, unfinished); Die Phi-losophiedes Christenthums (vol. i., Mentz, 1840, unfinished); Darstellung und Kritik des He-geVschen Systems (Mentz, 1844); and Der Protestantismus in seinem Wesen und seiner Entwickelung (Freiburg, 1846).
