Feathers may be cleansed with a lather of soap and hot water and pearl ash. When it is a little cool wash the feathers in it, gently squeezing it, rinse it well in cold water, shaking well before the fire, bnt not too near. Curl it by drawing each fibre over the blunt edge of a fruit knife.
