Time. The day, reckoning from sunrise, and the night, reckoning from sunset, were each divided into 12 equal parts, called the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc., hours. The first watch was from sunset to the third hour of the night. The second, or middle watch, was from the third hour to the sixth. The third watch, or cock-crowing, was from the sixth hour to the ninth. The fourth, or morning watch, was from the ninth hour of the night to sunrise.
