Jupiter. The chief of the gods, worshipped under that and other names by all the nations of antiquity. The temple and statue of Jupiter at Athens was one of the wonders of Greece, and he was worshipped under the names of Jupiter Olympus, and Jupiter Tonans, or the Thunderer. He was the Osiris of the Egyptians, the Bramah of the Hindoos, the Amnion of Ethiopia, the Woden of the Scandinavians; and some ascribe the Greek model to the Jehovah of the Jews.
