[L. arcus, bow;] The art of shooting with a bow and arrow. This was in very common use before the invention of firearms, and archery is still practiced as an amusement. The bow is usually made of yew or ash, and the arrows of ash. A good archer can send an arrow from 200 to 250 yards. In the Middle Ages the fate of battles was often decided by the skill of the archers.
