A gas existing in the atmosphere, first discovered in 1895 by Lord Ragleigh and William Ramsay. It is heavier than nitrogen and occurs in a very minute quantity. The discoverers were rewarded by the Smithsonian Institution with a prize of $10,000, offered for the most important new fact concerning the atmosphere.
