[Gk. chronos, time; and metron, a measure.] An instrument for the exact measurement of time. The name is commonly applied to a portable time-keeper, in opposition to a clock, which is stationary. In chronometers the balance-wheel is compensated, so as not to be affected by changes of temperature.
