[Gk. chrysos, gold.] The pupa or yellow form which many insects take before they get their wings. When the larva of the butterfly leaves off eating, it enters the chrysalis state. Wrapped in a dry skin, and hanging head downward, suspended or tied by,a silken thread, it remains seemingly dead. A marvellous change is going on, and when the skin bursts a fullgrown butterfly appears.
