Nuts produced by small insects which puncture the bark of the Lusitanian oak in Southern Europe and Western Asia, and lay their eggs in the wounds. They contain much tannin and are used in making tannin, ink, dye, and in medicine. Oak-apples are formed on other oaks in the same way.
