A term used in various sports and games to indicate the position of competitors, so that all shall have as nearly as possible an equal chance of winning. In horse-racing, weights are put upon horses not less than three years of age in proportion to their recorded performances. In foot racing, cycling contests, etc., competitors are started at different distances in proportion to previous performances. In chess and draughts, certain "men" are given up by the better player; and so on in other cases.
