[Gk. iaspis.] A hard precious stone of various colors (usually red or brown), which takes on a high polish, and is used for rings, seals, vases, and other ornaments, and also for the decoration of costly buildings. It is one of the varieties of quartz, and is found in veins and embedded masses in many rocks.
