[Coccinella.) A small kind of beetle of a brilliant red, orange, or yellow color, with black spots, or sometimes black with white, yellow, or red spots. It lays its eggs in little collections under the leaves of plants, among the plant-lice, on which both the larvae and the full-grown insects feed.
