[Fr. lentille.] An annual plant not unlike the bean, a native of the countries bordering on the Mediterranean, and cultivated from the earliest times. It is now grown in many parts of Europe and Asia, the straw being used as fodder for sheep and cattle. The flour of lentils is made into lentil soup, which is considered highly nutritious.
