[AS.] A plant of many varieties, with a round poi n ted stem and no leaves, \ which grows in moist ground. Before carpets came into use, the floors of houses were strewn with rushes, ana the wicks of candles were made from the pith of rushes. Chair-bottoms and baskets are sometimes woven of them.
