[L., from Gk. strychnos, nightshade.] A strong poison got from the seeds of nux vomica. It is obtained as a white crystalline substance, and has a bitter, acrid taste. It is insoluble in water, but dissolves in alcohol. In medicine it is used as a stimulant for the nerves.
