In some states larceny is divided into two classes: simple larceny, and compound larceny.

If the stealing is perpetrated without any aggravating circumstances attending the theft, such for instance as personal violence and the like, it is called simple larceny; but if it is accompanied by circumstances of aggravation it is called compound larceny. If one's property be taken from him by the use of force or violence or by putting him in fear, the offense is compound larceny or robbery.

Larceny from the person of another, and larceny from a house or building doubtless come within the definition of compound larceny.5
