A thin, narrow, flat muscle placed on the outer part of the chest in front.
Origin. - From the external surface of the first rib.
Insertion. - From its origin it passes obliquely downward and backward, and is inserted into the outer part of the sternum and the 3rd and 4th sternal cartilages.
Action. - It is not definitely known whether it contributes to inspiration or expiration.
