Here is a new kind of collection. Perhaps you have an autograph book, or a photograph album, but if you will start a shadow profile book, you will have something different. All you have to do is pin a sheet of white paper on the wall and have one of your friends stand so that his shadow falls on the paper-to show the profile of his face. With your pencil, draw the outline of his face and head. Bound together, you will have a memory book that will be fun to keep.

It might be fun to add fingerprints to your collection. Below each profile, fingerprint the person. All you need is a piece of felt wet with ink, water color paint, or shoe blacking. (Be sure the ink is absorbed in the felt before you use it.) Press the thumb down on the felt, then before it dries, stamp the fingerprint on the paper.

Autumn Leaf Collection

Melted wax

Collect as many pretty leaves as you would like to keep. Dip the ends of the leaves in melted wax, or drip a candle over them. Press the leaves between sheets of wax paper, using an iron that is warm enough to melt the wax. Now your leaves are ready for mounting and to put in a scrap book. If each leaf is glued to a sheet of mounting paper, and all the sheets are tied together with ribbon-punching holes on the left side of the paper so you can fasten the ribbon-you will have a book that will be fun to keep.

Windy Weather

Weather forecasts can often be made by the way the wind is blowing. A good sailor will know if a storm is coming because the wind will tell him. If you have a weather vane at your house, you have probably learned about the wind from that. Watch a flag on a pole. Sometimes it blows one way and sometimes another.

Many people dislike wind, but if it is not too strong, you can have fun on a windy day. Of course you need wind when you want to fly a kite-but not too much of it. The next windy day when you have a kite in the air, try sending messages to it. This is the way: Tie a small piece of tissue paper in a single knot around the kite string. Push it up a little, and then watch the wind take it up the string to your kite.

Another thing to do on a windy day is make a pin wheel. All you need is a square piece of paper-about eight inches. Fold this diagonally-from the right top corner to the bottom left hand corner (Fig. 1). Now fold the paper in half again (Fig. 2). Open the paper, and cut on each fold a little more than half way down to the center (Fig. 3). Gather up every other point on a pin, and prick it through the center to fasten the pin wheel to a stick. (Use a pencil, or a clothespin.)

Mother's Day

Do you know how mother's day started? Miss Anna Jarvis, who lived in Philadelphia, started the custom of having one day out of the year when we should think of how much we love our mothers.

In our country we set aside a Sunday in May when we wear a flower in honor of Mother. We wear a pink one if she is living, and a white one if she is not. Usually it is a carnation. Some people give gifts to their mothers, but Miss Jarvis did not start this custom. She liked to wear the flower for her mother.

Mother's day is celebrated in England too. There it is on the middle Sunday of Lent. On this day all the children try to visit their mothers, and they carry a cake or gift. The gift cake is called, "A Simnel Cake." It is rich and very sweet, and stuffed with plums. Usually it is scalloped in shape.

We do not have to wait until May to show our love for our mothers. Every day should be Mother's Day, and every day we should let mother know how much we love her and appreciate all she does for us.

Butterflies

If you are lucky and can find a butterfly chrysalis, you will have fun watching it change. First the butterfly laid its eggs-on a leaf, in a crack of a tree, rock, or building. Next the eggs change into caterpillars. This caterpillar sheds its skin and spins a silky web about it making what is called a chrysalis. Hunt through the garden and see if you can find a chrysalis hanging from a leaf. Pick the leaf carefully and lay it in a box (with cover), then watch how it changes.

There is an early butterfly that sometimes hatches when the snow is still on the ground. You may see it in the woods on the first warm days of spring.

If you would like to see butterflies in the winter. make some out of paper. Cut them from a folded piece-to give the wings the same size. These may be mounted on a bobby pin, or doll's clothespin; and in this way fastened to a lamp shade, or stuck in a flower pot. Do all your coloring before you fasten the holders to the butterfly. Of course they should be colored on both sides because the bottom of the wings will show as well as the top.

Using a bobby pin, slip the middle of the butterfly through the pin.

With a small clothespin, glue the center section of the butterfly to the pin-above the slit. Wind a small wire around the head to make two feelers, and your butterfly will look very real.

The Calendar Of Flowers

There is a flower for every month. Trace these flowers. Then take out your crayons or paints and give them the colors they should have. If you are not sure how they should look, find them in a flower book.
