Polished silver is frosted by a few minutes' immersion in nitric acid diluted with an equal volume of water. A better effect is gained by frequent dipping and withdrawing. On removal from the acid, rinse in water, immerse for a few moments in a strong bath of potassium cyanide, and then rinse in cold clean water. During these processes, handle the silver with wooden tongs or clamps, and do not touch it with the fingers.
